Costs

Digout costs and depths

A digout is priced on volume and access. Two things push the figure up: how deep we have to go for the finished surface, and how far the spoil has to be carried before it reaches a vehicle.

Driveway digout, around 40 square metres£1,600 to £3,000Deeper dig for vehicle loading

Common questions

Digouts: your questions answered

How deep should a patio digout be?

Around 200mm for a patio, allowing for 100 to 150mm of compacted sub-base and the slab and bed on top, deeper if the ground is soft.

What happens to the soil you dig out?

It is loaded and taken to a licensed transfer site. Where the garden needs filling elsewhere we reuse it and only remove the surplus.

Can you dig out a garden with no rear access?

Yes. Where a machine cannot get round we hand dig and barrow out, which takes longer, so we price that clearly before starting.

Do you check for pipes and cables?

Yes. We look at the property, ask about known runs and dig carefully around anything shallow rather than assuming the ground is clear.

Is a digout worth doing before spring?

It is one of the best winter jobs. Getting the excavation finished over the colder months means the surface can be laid as soon as the weather turns.
